Another Newbie, but Oldbie

Hello,
I'm very pleased with my results so far with SuperDuper. As far as I know I've been following the directions closely, but I've come across something odd (at least to this old guy's experience). Did a full backup onto an external drive & booted into it successfully. Everything appears fine but launching from the icons in the cloned drive launches the applications on my original hard disk. Consequently I'm unable to partition and reclone onto my old first edition flatscreen iMac's HD because the Disk Utility I'm using is open on the HD I'm trying to partition!
Please give some advice to a retired senior that is a such a long-time supporter of Mac shareware I still use my printed "AddressBook" from System 7. I can hear the "bwahahahas" already!

Hey, oldpocket -- welcome!

Definitely don't feel old. Things in this industry move so fast that I think all of us feel left out/behind/confused each and every day. We'll get through together, though: that's why we're here.

So... it sounds to me, at first blush, that rather than using the "Backup - all files" copy script, you used "Safety Clone - shared users and applications". In that case, the applications would indeed be shared between the original and the copy: so, when you launch the files on the copy the original will start.

Did you follow the directions in the Appendix of the SD! manual? Those are pretty good for what you're trying to do... let me know a bit more of what's happening here, and we'll get it straightened out.
