Smart update ran out of space

I am backing up my boot drive (750GB) to an external partition (750GB). I do an erase copy once a month and smart update weekly. I hadn't done my smart update in awhile. Today when I ran it, it ran out of space. How big do I have to make my external partition to make this work?
