Using Migration Assistant with SuperDuper

Hello ... the drive on my 27 inch imac seems to have given up the ghost ... again : ( before I've been able to do a selective migration over to my laptop. I've tried to safe boot and boot from the SuperDuper backup from the 27incher but can't get past the grey screen : ( Can anyone advise regarding how to continue the migration using migration assistant if I attach the SuperDuper backup to my laptop?
