Backup failure with Superduper to Western Digital drive

I've got:
Mac 10.6.6 running Snow Leopard

I've been trying to back up to a Western Digital 500G external hard drive -- I've used this drive for a few years and no problems. Well, I went to back up and drive was full, and Time Machine wasn't deleting old backups. I basically erased everything on the drive (using disk utility) as I wanted to start at square one.

Both Time Machine and Superduper get partway in and then I get a backup failure message.

I'm guessing it's certain files that are hanging me up but I have no idea how to deal with them and I'm scared of erasing things I need. I am NOT computer savvy so please, can someone walk me through the proper steps? I have run a repair disk both on the WD drive and the Mac HD. When I try to repair permissions on the Mac HD it fails on that as well.

I don't have an error log from Time Machine.

You're using Copy Newer, and if I had to guess, your backup drive is full...

No, I cleared my hard drive so it now has 500G available. I ran disk utility on the external drive and the Mac HD. Really stuck here...not sure what to do...
