If you are backing up weekly how is monthly helpful. Isn't it just a copy of the last week or are you saying that I'm keeping a copy of four weekly backup's , then put all of them together on a monthly copy? Would you explain your setup in a little more detail?

Who are you asking?

A monthly would be up to 30 days old. A weekly is only up to 7 days old.

ok, I think I got some of it. You are saying the cheapest way for a backup, if money is a factor, is to partition the External HD into 4 parts. Take a snapshot of the drive weekly and store on one of the partition, such as wk1,wk2,wk3. But on week 4, 30 days later, how do you get a backup that shows the last 30 days. I know this is simple, but I a little lost at this point. ? And if you can afford it, use separate drives for each week.

Would you or anyone else that has this down explained how they have their ext HD backup setup for the best protection of their data, since ext HD are at a much lower price at this time.
Does anyone do daily or is that a waste of time or to redundant?

I know dave, you probably have a big system, but a simple format would be helpful. The guide has been extremely helpful, I just need to tweek out the last details in my mind.

Thank you.

You don't have a backup that shows the "last 30 days". You have a backup that's 30 days old. I'm not suggesting that you capture every change of every file. I'm saying you have something that's older so you can roll further back should you need to.

Ok, you're saying the 1st weekly backup becomes the monthly backup when it becomes 30 days old. Then I should move it to the monthly partition or external HD dedicated to that specific function. Is this correct?

was i correct on this part from above with a slight change:
You are saying the cheapest way for a backup, if money is a factor, is to partition the External HD into 4 parts. Take a snapshot of the drive weekly and store on one of the partition, such as wk1,wk2,wk3. on wk 4 move week 1 to the monthly partition, move the other over and backup to wk 3 partition? or is there an easier process?

"And if you can afford it, use separate drives for each week."

No. I'm saying you have one backup you update on the first of every month. One backup that you update every, say, Monday. And one backup you update every day.
