I have a 750GB OWC external on my desk, backing up iMac drive of the same size every morning at 3:15. Is it better practice to leave the external running permanently or to unmount after each daily backup?

Although it's certainly not required, unmounting it would be safer, because it ensures the drive is mostly isolated from problems and crashes.
