Can someone please tell me if either of these external drives is any good. I saw them at Future Shop and Best Buy and they are half the price of other drives at a local mac store.

1. Seagate FreeAgent - GoFlexDesk (Mac OS)
1 TB
USB 2.0
Plug and Play
NTFS Driver for Mac

2. LaCie Hard Disk - Design by Neil Poulsan (Mac OS)
1 TB
USB 2.0
480 mBits/Sec

Oh, I almost forgot a most important question. How do I know if these drives need to be formatted before using them. They both have the mac logo on the box and they say they can be used with Mac OS. Does that mean I can just plug them in and drag files to them?

The LaCie is a good drive. I haven't use the Seagate, but generally wouldn't recommend USB only, nor using NTFS under OSX.

Thanks Dave, well the LaCie is USB 2.0 only I guess because they sell it for Mac and PC but it's half the price of the Straight Mac LaCie. I am tired of paying double for hardware just because it's straight mac, so is basically the only difference the speed?

And I'd appreciate it if you could answer my question about formatting. Thanks.

Sorry, I misread the "480mb/s" as FW400, for some reason - sorry about that.

It's hard to believe that drive would be half the price of the LaCie d2 Quadra, which is very reasonably priced.

I don't know of any drive that wouldn't generally support both Mac and PC. But some less expensive drives use lesser quality bridges...

I use a LaCie 500GB FW for my SD backups, its great - I wouldn't use a USB though, too slow.:)

HP MediaSmart Server ex475

http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mediasmart-server/hp_mediasmartserver_macosx.pdf

Hi, someone showed me this the other day. I'm wondering if I purchased this could I use 2, 1TB hard Drives in it and then just take out one of the hard drives and store it offsite or does it need both to work. Are the drives "mirrored" or does it copy the same data to both drives? Please explain if you can.

PDF Page #9 - "Systems running Mac OS X will not be backed up by Windows Home Server. However, a user may
still back their files up to the HP MediaSmart Server, either manually (using drag and drop copying or
Applescript) or by third-party software that performs backups to a SMB filesystem." ? HP

1. Can someone please tell me if they know of any "Mac" software to allow me to "Automatically Backup" my data to the HP Server?

2. My biggest priority is to be able to take one of the 1TB hard drives and store it off site in case of fire etc. HP says the drives are "hot-swappable" meaning you can remove them while operating but can someone please explain to me how these servers work. Does the HP copy or "mirror" data to the drives or separately to each drive and would I be able to remove a drive to store off-site and still use the remaining drive(s)?

I think you have to ask HP MediaSmart server questions of HP, actually. But we're happy to back up to their share using the steps in "Backing up over a network".

That said, in general, don't use a network drive as a primary backup...

Ok, thanks Dave. I guess I will buy the LaCie or the G-Drive then (both with Firewire). Iomega sells a sweet USB/Firewire drive too but it's only on special order as Best Buy, Memory Express and other stores don't sell it.
