I cannot restore from my User files backup as I get a message saying the home folder or those beneath it are in use by OS X. How do I restore this user without resorting to booting from a DVD?
Ta.

You'd have to restore folders individually...

Thanks, but it refused the Desktop folder for the same reason.
I guess that 'User backup' is to get back individual files easily.
I shall boot from my install disc to perform the copy - once I've finished installing my applications. And I shall of course be doing a complete disk clone as I had the last time my disc drive failed!
Thanks.

Be very careful. It's not easy to restore a user folder, and Disk Utility isn't going to be able to do it as such - you might be better off using SuperDuper! running from a USB stick with a basic OS install on it. Erase the folder first, of course, and then use "Backup - all files" with "Copy Newer" to integrate the Home Folder.
