View Full Version : MacBook Pro, LaCie, SuperDuper stops

My problem is the same as BenA's except for configuration. I have a first-generation MacBook Pro 17", 2gb RAM, 100 gb internal hard drive, and am running OS 10.5.4. My SuperDuper is 2.5 (v84) and is unregistered at this point.

I've tried to do a full backup to a 120 gb external LaCie drive several times. While SuperDuper! has worked fine many times in the past for me doing full backups, it now stops dead maybe a third of the way through the process. Elapsed time keeps going, but nothing else. In my previous successful use, I had the LaCie partitioned and now I don't. That's the only difference in conditions that is obvious to me.

I suspect there's something that I should have done to the LaCie that I didn't know to do when I got rid of the partitioning.

I welcome help. Thanks.

Drop me a note to support, John, and I'll provide a command that'll show what we're copying when it fails.

I have the same problem with my macbook Mac OS X 10.4.11, unregistred Copy of SD and a LACIE. I tried to backup it for the 2nd time. The first one went smothely. But now it simply won't go beyond 2/3 or so.

So long,

Julian

I have MacBook Pro 1st generation, Mac OS X 10.4.11, SD 2.5 (v84) registered.

Regularly SD backups seem to stop mid-way through (as in no SD activity from around 5 minutes in, for another 45 or so minutes before I kill it). Even when it works, the backups are way slower than before I started noticing this problem.

Specific hardware/software configuration causing the problem?

I'll try emailing to you now.

SD 2.62 on Tiger. Same problem. Backup used to work but suddenly stops at about 2/3 of the way. Have tried all and repetitively. I'm curious about an extended log info to know if there's perhaps a particular file that's the cause. Should I too email you? Thanks, Martin.

iBook, PPC, originating files on external drive, target on external drive, all daisy chained with FireWire 400. Used to work flawless for months.

I found this in the console.log when I search for "SD"

Feb 28 16:15:20 techt crashdump[397]: SDCopy crashed
Feb 28 16:15:32 techt crashdump[397]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/SDCopy.crash.log
Feb 28 17:06:36 techt diskarbitrationd[40]: SDCopy [394]:47639 not responding.

Then I found this log in /Library/Logs > CrashReporter > SDCopy.crash.log

Sorry for posting in 3 posts - I don't have access to email now and I'm on a temporary partition.

Not really the same problem. What version of SD!?

mypointofview

I use SuperDuper! version 2.6.2. It seems that SD ("SDcopy") crashed in the background? I read various posts on this forum about SD "hanging" -- everybody had a unique approach to the issue but the symptoms were the same. That's why I did not start a new thread. I hope it does not confuse future readers.

My set up is a bit old timer for the year 2011 -- I'm using a white iBook dual USB, running Tiger 10.4.11.

I tried the "Erase then copy files" method and also running SD from a partition that's totally bare bones (no fancy stuff going on behind the scenes). Always the same issue.

Also I ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility and all seems just fine.

Do you have an attached MS-DOS formatted device (eg a flash drive/card) that doesn't have a name?

mypointofview

Nothing MS-DOS attached while running SuperDuper!

I occasionally have an unnamed Memorstick from a Sony camera mounted -- perhaps there are some bad left over files because of a removal without proper unmounting beforehand? All my other MS-DOS sticks are named.

A Windows related thing I can remember is that I changed the line breaks in a text file that I keep on my Mac (I locked that file) to Windows carriage returns (CRLF) in order to make it easier to read on a USB stick on Windows.

Memory sticks and cards for cameras are MS-DOS formatted (FAT32, sometimes FAT16).

Power off, disconnect everything but the backup drive, power back up and see if it works...

Well, I have nothing really attached, just the source drive and the target drive. This is how it used to work for a long time. I use SD since years. Never a problem really that couldn't be fixed fast. I just ran it again to backup a different partition and it worked, so it cannot be the drive or the app, only perhaps the partition (nothing bad though reported by DiskWarrior) or, what I suspect, it's a paricular file which simply refuses to be read.

David, somewhere you noted some command to get more log info about which file is accessed. You said while SD is running this log info can be obtained. Could you point me into a new direction to get me back and running? I'm now using CCC (slow as a snail) - can't wait to return to SD!

If you're crashing with the dump provided before, the problem is very likely a bug in Tiger with the API that returns the volume list - it used to generate exceptions just like the one you sent when used with "null" named FAT32 volumes.

You can look in the console, of course, but if SD! is crashing there's not going to be any SD log to look at.

Should I give up? I have no Microsoft formatted drive attached. I powered all off and back on. I even ran Surface Scan on source drive and wiped target partition, writing zeros. It's again stuck at two thirds of the way. All used to work for months before. This is crazy.

Stuck or crashing? They're totally different things.

SDCopy had crashed (like before). Next I will try to reinstall SuperDuper!
