I bought a new FireWire drive and forgot to re-format it as HFS+ Journaled. I ended up doing a Backup-all of my Journaled internal drive to the non-Journaled external drive. The backup appeared to work.

- is there a problem with backing up a journaled fs. onto a non-journaled one?

- can/should I use disk utility to convert the external drive to journaled? will this mess up the backup state if I do that?

- if I keep the external backup non-journaled, and then I need to restore the internal (journaled) internal drive from the backup one day, will the restore process end up re-formatting the internal drive to the same non-Journaled state as the external drive?

No, no problem to back up journaled to non-journaled (or vice versa). If you'd like, you can convert it -- won't mess up anything.

If you do an erase-then-copy, we should maintain the journaling state of the drive as we find it.
