Safe to run SD while using system?

Is it safe to do a SmartBackup, or Complete backup, while actively using the system? Or will this create problems with files being changed mid-process?

You can lightly use the system while backing up, but don't run programs that write to large files -- Entourage, VMWare, Parallels, Virtual PC, BitTorrent, etc.
