How about a way to back-up to a folder on an external HD, this would save a lot of hassle having to partition,

You can, actually: just store the backup in a sparse image in that folder...

but the ballooning sparse images fill my NAS with unused, but allocated, free space!

Any more thought on making the hdiutil compact a checkbox in the UI?
