smart backup not reducing image sizes

Smart backup does seem to delete files from the target disk image, but the size of the sparse image continues to grow -- anyone else having this problem?

This is not unexpected: Apple's images don't seem to shrink when there's space to do so. There are some examples on the forum of how to shrink them, though...
