I read the docs and around the forum. I have some queries about superduper. I have a firewire drive that's formatted as hfs. If I back up files will it erase everything that exists on my firewire drive? Which leads to the question can I backup and restore without erasing my drive? I plan to upgrade to a 24" so ideally I would want a full restore on the new machine.

Some questions about the backup itself.. will it back up everything? My custom icons, prefrences, licenses for my apps. Lastly after reading another thread once I get my new machine, I should just boot via dvd --> disk utility--> restore.

Hi, 'freedevil'. We try to cover this pretty explicitly in the User's Guide, but in case you missed it, please see "Storing a backup alongside other files on a destination drive" in there. It explains exactly how to accomplish this.

And, yes, we back up everything -- but applications that "tie" themselves to a specific disk will likely require you to reactivate them.

If you're going to get a new Mac, I really encourage you to partition your FireWire drive appropriately and back up directly to it. That'll make it a lot easier to restore, since you'll be able to migrate (and even boot directly from the drive).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply... So should I just boot from my firewire parition and restore (being copy from firewire directly to Machintosh Hd) or do I just use migration assistant??
