I connect to a shared volume on an XP machine on my LAN. There I've placed a disk image created with Disk Utility on my Mac, and I access and mount this image from OS X.

Is this a good place to let SuperDuper store the backup image? The disk format should be ok, right? Even if it's placed on a Windows system, the image approach should provide me with a "safe Mac haven" on the PC, I think?

And another thing: copying the files took quite a while, so I wonder: will it be faster to do a regular copy operation right there in Finder, copying all files on HD to my mounted image on my mounted image, and then do an Smart Update with SuperDuper to include all files not copied by Finder?

Maybe I should just get an external FireWire drive ... :-)

You should get an external FireWire drive. But this approach will work as long as the XP volume is properly formatted as NTFS and not FAT32.

But -- it'll be slow. Recovery is more difficult. Spend the $ and get a drive. :)

Yes, it was indeed slow. 0,35 MB/s. I gave it up and used a FireWire drive instead.

I think you'll be much happier in the long run.
