hello

i'm smart-updating my second computer from my first one. Although I have the .Spotlight-V100 file exempt from the copying process, each time I update computer 2, Spotlight does a complete re-indexing. Would there be a way to avoid this?

thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, no -- at present, spotlight's going to reindex after this kind of copy.

ok, do you think this might be a reasonable feature request ? — Anyway, would you know to suggest a different kind of copy?

thanks a lot

Given that you want to make the same both times, no, I don't think a different copy type is going to work: this is something we're working on, though. No promises, no dates. :)

…*what exactly do you mean by "you want to make the same both times" ? — And do you happen to know what will happen if I make my .Spotlight… file write-protected?

thanks again

You know, I don't know what my fingers were doing when I typed that. Other than typing that.

What I meant was "Given that you want to make both drives the same". We'll still copy the file if it's write protected.

sorry, I mean: if I make the file on the target computer write protected, possibly at sudo level? (I fear SD will then report an error and stop copying.)

You're really not going to want to do that, and it won't help. How about just adding the destination into the Spotlight Privacy tab? Then it won't index at all...

that's right of course; but since it's another computer, not just a backup device, not indexing it will be a bit of a drawback in usability …*Maybe I'll try and think of something else (like, access this invisible or hidden or whatever Spotlight file, store it elsewhere, and then put it back … )
