"Open with.." gives duplicates from backup

Hi there,
I searched the forums for a solution to this problem, but could not find any thing. My apologies if there is such a topic already.

Backing up my hard drive to an external drive is causing Mac OS X to display duplicates of every single application when I use the "Open With.." menu on documents. Because I keep my drive attached all day that contains my full backup, it lists the duplicates throughout the day. Is there anyway for my Mac to 'ignore' the applications on the backup drive?
