I have a full back up of my HD which is about 2 weeks old, recently my systemj started playing up and I'm wondering whether there is a way to just restore my system but not the rest of the HD as I have newer files on the HD.

That's not really practical, no -- what I'd suggest is simply doing an archive-and-install of the OS.
