Partitioning?

I thought I read somewhere that SD can also partition hard drives. Is this true? If so is there more information that we can read about this function?

No, we can't partition hard drives -- but Disk Utility certainly can! Just select the drive and switch to the "Partition" tab. The rest is fairly self-explanatory.
